The average price of imidacloprid for imports in June 2016 was some US$35.7 per kilogram, representing an inflation rate of 8.5% when compared with the same period last year, according to a survey by the Global Agrochemicals web portal.
Prices rose alongside import volumes. From January to June this year, agrochemical industries in Brazil purchased more than 2,100 tons of imidacloprid. As such, in only six months, these imports accounted for 80% of the total imports in 2015.
According to the study, the rising inflation is attributable to the continuing rise in demand for imidacloprid on the international market, given the strong efficiency of the neonicotinoid insecticide with systemic action on the crops of cotton, rice, potato, sugarcane, citrus, kidney beans, tobacco, corn, soybeans, tomato and wheat, among others. “Approved in over 120 countries and for diverse crops, imidacloprid has a wide spectrum of action and controls sucking insects as well as whiteflies, mealybugs, aphids, thrips, and termites,” stated Global Agrochemicals.
Brazil has been importing more of the active ingredient each year. Last year alone, imports of the product grew by 100% compared with 2014, reaching 2,600 tons. Strong sales were registered in the second half of 2015, when 87% of the total imports were received.
The major supplier of the technical product was India, contributing approximately 45% of the total imports, followed by China with 27% and Germany with 27% as well.
